Better Beverage Society Bulletin – February Gathering

Here I sit with a glass of wine, enjoying the eve…wine? What about
beer! Yes, on occasion a nice red wine hits the spot. But this isn’t
about the annual wine tasting, that’s later. This is about our next,
truly exciting BBS gathering this Monday (Feb 11). And you won’t want
to miss it.

The Beer
Those who have been focused on local brews cannot help but notice that
Flying Bison Brewing has a newfound theme of brewing special beers.
Headed by Ryan Coleman, the FB brew team has been creating all sorts
of exciting brews. And Ryan is coming to Gene McCarthy’s this Monday
to show some of them off. Included in the sampling will be the ever
popular Blackbird Oatmeal Stout, Helldiver Oatmeal Pale Ale (an
English style beer), a new, hoppier Buffalo IPA, a robust Brindle
Porter, a Black IPA for hop lovers, and the latest version of Aviator
Red, an Irish Red Ale.

The Food
To meet this challenge, chef Dustin Tower has created a three course
repast: Course 1 – smoked salmon salad with grilled red onion, bleu
cheese and pinenuts over field greens with a fresh ginger and
grapefruit vinaigrette; Course 2 – stout braised beef topped with a
roasted garlic butter with smoked cheddar mashed potatoes and candied
carrots; and finishing us off with “a dessert of some kind” (those are
his words!), “perhaps a cheesecake.”

As always, the event kicks off at 6 p.m. New this time and something I
have mentioned in the past is a price increase. The dinner and three
hours of free taps will cost $30, still the best deal in town.

Beer School – Lagers

For those who want to plan ahead, don’t miss Beer School on Sunday,
Feb 24, at 2 p.m. The topic will be lagers, and I promise to surprise
you with some tasty treats. I foresee lagers as the new frontier for
exciting craft beer flavors. Beer School costs only $10, and is
limited to 20 students.

See you soon!
